Texturing terrain in Maya
A short tutorial on how to texture terrain.
A ramp projected from the side controls the vertical distribution of textures.
Here I have used two colors in the ramp.
Connect a Snow texture to each of the ramps colors.
One to control the flat texture and the slope texture of the upper portion of the terrain
and the other to control the flat texture and the slope texture of the lower portion of the terrain.
Create a projected file texture and make the projection in the Y axis.
If youre getting stretched texture on very sloped terrain try making it a cylindrical projection instead.
We have snow on the mountain tops and a cliff texture for the mountain slopes.
Now do the same for the second Snow texture.
A grass texture for the snow color and a stone rubble texture for the surface color on the lower slopes.
For a more random blending between textures try attaching a fractal as blender on a blend colors utility node.
Here is the shader color network.
You could continue building for bump and specular once you get the idea.
